Sort Of

On Friday I opened the Vesper Room. Since then I've watched rooms appear with one person standing in them — built for two, waiting for a man who was never actually asked. The same half-said thing, everywhere. This week: why.

Sort Of

On Friday I opened the Vesper Room. The response has been good — better than I expected. But one line keeps coming back, in different words, from different men: the app is wonderful. I just don't know how to get my husband to do it with me.

The thing is: I can see some things. Not your messages — I can't read those. I can't see what happens inside a room, ever. That's technically impossible. The app was designed this way. That's yours, and it stays yours. But I can see one thing: how many room exist, and how many people are standing in it.

Some of them hold one.

A room built for two. Named, arranged, waiting. And one man inside it, alone — holding the door for someone he never actually asked to come. He did the easy half. He made the room. He did not do the hard half. He never said the sentence that would put the other man in it.

Which is the same thing I keep finding everywhere, in different clothes.

He told him. Sort of. Gestured at it once, softly, in a sentence loose enough that the other man could nod and let it drift past. And then he built a room and waited to be found.

Maybe that's not you. Maybe your man is already in the room — then seal this and go, you've done the hard part. But if you're the one standing alone in a space you made for two, still waiting to be discovered instead of saying the words, stay with me until Wednesday.

Because there are two kinds of not-knowing in your life. One is the fuel — the ache when he's late, the one you'd never trade. Keep it. The other is just a room you built and never invited him into, wearing mystery's clothes. And that one costs you something, quietly, every day.

Wednesday: how to tell them apart. Why one is the point, and the other is a slow leak.

And a cat.

Curious, cuck? You should be.
