The Rules You Never Made

The Rules You Never Made

He came home late. You heard the shower, then the mattress. You didn't ask.

The next morning there's coffee, and the radio, and a work thing he has to get to. Neither of you says a word about the night before. Neither of you ever does.

And here's the thing: nobody ever agreed to that.

You didn't sit down and negotiate "we don't talk about it the next morning." It just settled in, the way furniture ends up where it ends up. And now you both obey it as if it were law.

Most couples think their rules are the ones they agreed on. They're not. Next to every rule you negotiated, there's a second set nobody ever wrote down.

He never tells you from his side, so you always have to ask. You never ask for the name, so he never offers it. You always find out afterwards, never before, and neither of you remembers deciding that.

Some of these unwritten rules protect something real, and you'd be wise to leave them alone. Others are just old caution nobody has questioned since the first time. A few are quietly costing you something: the version of this you'd actually want, shelved so long ago that you stopped thinking of it as an option.

The trouble is you can't tell which is which until you say one out loud.

That's what this week is about: rules. The ones that protect your marriage. The ones that make it hot. And the ones that quietly stopped working without either of you noticing.

On Wednesday, we'll look at the rules you did agree on. How to tell a safety rule from a hot one. Why your no-kissing rule might not be what you think it is. And what happens when the two get mixed up.

Until then, watch your week for the other ones. The ones you never made.

Which rule do the two of you follow that neither of you has ever said out loud?

Sit with that one until Wednesday. Don't fix it yet.

P.S. The site has a new home, and one new page I'm quietly proud of: a page you can send him, for when saying it out loud is the hard part. → navigating-compersion.com/for-you
